Introduction

Since God sent me the vision about "Unity of Deaf and Hearing for sending gospel to children and deaf in Asian countries", God let me understand that the importance of a cross cultural ministry needs to start from Hong Kong and distribute to other countries in Asia. What we need to do is: Hearing Christians have to enter to the Deaf Community to share gospel, to educate our society about Deaf Awareness, promote Christianity sign language training and participate in Asian pastoral workers training for Deaf Ministry.

Deaf and Youth Asian Ministry is a Hong Kong registered non-profitable society since 2011. We respect for the deaf people and children in Asia. The official website established in 2010. To enter to the Deaf community, to understand Deaf culture and to build the friendship and trust with Deaf spiritually. We conduct co-enrollment training on bible study through literacy training to union the Deaf and hearing people in Asia.

Deaf people have the same right to services and opportunities as hearing people. Consider the past, present of Deaf Ministry Development is lack of hearing people tend to conduct by the reason of various difficulties due to communication barrier. Co-enrollment education programs on deaf education in other countries show improvement in learning attitudes. That is mainly for literacy development. Deaf associations and deaf ministries are keeping on work for the deaf individually in the pass a few decades. Recent census figures show that our communities are more culturally and ethnically diverse than ever before. Many of us find it is challenging to build relationships with people from backgrounds unlike our own. How do we be trust and unity between the deaf and the hearing people? How do we share with other cultural groups - such as Deaf Culture? It comes up an ultimate irrevocable communication problem without communicate with their own language - sign language. Meanwhile, hearing people can't get along with Deaf people through a healthy value. It is the right time to focus on the need even it is a road less travel.

Significance
Churches in the U.S. and some other European countries develop various programs for hearing. It helps share love in their early stage of mental development individually. But Deaf are lack of chances involve in bilingual learning and activities (spoken language and sign language) with hearing due to language barrier and hard of communication in the mainstream society

Ministries for the Deaf Community have been attracting a lot of attention in churches in the west not concentrate to union in between both of deaf and hearing. More unfortunately, Asia is lack of experience and misconception about insight into the problems on deaf emotion and communication from the view point of union between both parties. The mode of collaboration reflects the mission on this ministry: break the bondage of misconceive in both of the deaf and hearing people. We get into the Deaf to learn from each other.

Often the models used for hearing ministries are not the most effective for reaching the Deaf. The key to reach the Deaf through their culture is our relationship and trust. We need humility and becoming like them. (That is: stay with them with the love from Christ.) The culture of Deaf people, especially in the Asia countries, has not been studied in depth or paid much attention to. Culture is a set of learned behaviors of a group of people who have their own language, values, rules of behavior and traditions. Deaf feel a strong identification with Sign Language as their language. It is part of their cultural background.

In Hong Kong, most of deaf children study in the mainstream school which means deaf people learn by spoken language (even in deaf school), NOT by their mother tongue - sign language. There are almost 10 deaf associations to provide social service, sign language training, skill development, interpretation service and so on. We have Christian churches for the Deaf. We, Hearing and Deaf live in the same world but we still isolate each other seriously, however. It's the time to understand Deaf Culture, raise the deaf awareness, to communicate with Deaf, to build the trust and relationship through communication and activities interaction in our society. It is a need for Christian both of Deaf and Hearing to break the wall by building trust. It is a way for telling good news to the Deaf through the unity in our Holy Spirit.

In some books about Linguistics, you may read that "Language lies at the heart of making and shaping the social relation themselves." In some books about Cross-cultural, you may read that "Our identity is as an individual or as a part of a group is foundational to how we view responsibility."

Ministry Resources

Providing pastoral training, bible study in sign language and bible interpretation to the deaf people is a need either prelingually deaf and post lingually deaf (deafen adults and the hard of hearing). There is nothing systematic and profound yet in this area practically in Asian countries.

Very few hearing Christians are willing to involve to the deaf community due to the great difficulty on communication barrier with deaf people and lack of awareness and knowledge in deaf culture. We use a cultural view of deafness to do the deaf ministry; share the love with Deaf and hearing children in a bilingual atmosphere to learn from Deaf. God's saving is for both of Deaf and Hearing! Some churches providing interpretation for the Deaf but most of people in churches are still isolate to two groups and lack of communication due to the language barrier. The key to reach the Deaf and their culture is relationship and trust. We are not doing things for the deaf people but we are growth and make it happen together with the Deaf. Both of hearing and deaf people who wish to involve in Deaf ministry must be with humility to learn from each other in the cross-cultural mission! That's the value, the Love!

To reach Deaf to Christ is bonding of trust occur! When the hearing persons love the Deaf, they are willing to get into their culture and build the bonding, to embrace the values of their culture. Culture is directly associated with ones own language. When a missionary enters a nation or a people group, it is not to be with the idea of changing their culture but leave the culture in tact. It shows true respect for the people themselves. When people hear the gospel in their own language it is much clearer than hearing it in another language.
